It is important for companies working in areas of high technology to constantly be aware of new advances which may be disruptive to their operations. In addition to monitoring technical journal articles, conference proceedings and trade publications, a key resource to watch is the intellectual property associated with technologies of interest.

But when evaluating a set of patents, how do you know which represent inventions that are potential disruptive, and which are not? A number of metrics have been developed which can be used to evaluate individual patent families to identify those which represent potentially disruptive inventions. This paper will review some of those metrics and give a real world example of their use.
