Executive Summary

In many industries, innovation is generally recognized as a critical ingredient for corporate success.

Until relatively recent times, most companies used internal research and development as their only method of innovation. This white paper
employs a case study of three biotechnology and three pharmaceutical companies to demonstrate how techniques can be applied to examining large data sets to measure large and small molecule drug pipeline trends. Nerac’s information analysis was applied to non-patent and patent data to reach conclusions about drug development trends.

The pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Sanofi-Adventis, and the biotechnology companies Amgen, Genentech, and Genzyme were chosen for the case study because all are developing small and large molecule therapeutics, their patent activity is vigorous, they have active pipelines, and their revenues are high.
